Analyst, Climate Change Think Tank, Japan-based

InfluenceMap is a globally recognized non-profit think tank driving change on climate and sustainability. It produces cutting-edge, objective research on how businesses and finance impact the climate crisis, working collaboratively across corporate, financial, public, civil society, and media sectors.

InfluenceMap is best known for its LobbyMap platform, which analyzes corporate advocacy and policy engagement on climate change and biodiversity loss. Its work has been featured in the media globally, used by hundreds of investors, and informed numerous climate campaigns. Other work streams include the FinanceMap platform, which assesses the climate credentials of the financial sector, and the Carbon Majors platform, which tracks emissions from the world’s largest polluters. With offices in London, New York, Tokyo, Seoul, Brussels, and São Paulo, we are a team of 70+ dynamic professionals shaping the climate conversation worldwide.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a Japan-based Analyst to conduct research on companies and industry associations using our LobbyMap methodology, which assesses the corporate sector's advocacy and engagement with government policy to address the climate crisis.

You will be responsible for assessing companies on climate change and/or biodiversity loss. You will primarily work on the LobbyMap program, the world’s leading platform for measuring corporate climate policy engagement. By mastering our methodology and processes, you will have the opportunity to specialize in corporate climate policy engagement in Japan. You will have the opportunity to engage with our key stakeholders in the region (investors, civil society groups, the media, and companies) and make a real impact on the trajectory of the climate and nature agendas.

Full training in our research methods and how to communicate our results effectively will be provided. Upon demonstrating your ability in this specialization, you may also have the opportunity to develop expertise in other areas, such as specific sectors, policy areas, or geographic regions, in line with the organization’s project needs. Our approach is highly data-oriented and involves accuracy, consistency, and great attention to detail. InfluenceMap’s work is widely used by finance, the media, and other stakeholders, and thus, we place great importance on communicating our content (both written and verbal) effectively.

What you will do

  • Conduct rigorous research and analysis on companies and industry associations using the LobbyMap methodology
  • Produce high-quality, data-driven research outputs with a strong emphasis on accuracy and consistency
  • Communicate findings effectively to a range of stakeholders, including investors, civil society, media, and corporate representatives

Requirements

To be successful in this role at InfluenceMap, you should have:

  • Native Japanese language skills and fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • 1–2 years’ full-time experience in a Japanese business working environment, with a good understanding of Japanese and Western business cultures. We will also consider applications from new graduates.
  • Outstanding analytical and data analysis skills, with a very strong attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate complex issues and data-driven analysis convincingly
  • IT and software skills across a range of common applications
  • Right to work in Japan

  • Employment type: Full-time
  • Location: Ideally based in Tokyo, but remote working options also considered
  • Salary: 4.5 million JPY base salary
  • Benefits: All statutory health, insurance, and employment benefits
  • Time off: 14 days paid vacation per year and an extra day of paid holiday after each year of service (capped at 19 days) + national holidays
