Job Description

Location: Niseko or Furano, Japan

Dates: November, 2026 - April 2027 (exact dates TBC) - Seasonal, Full-time

Salary: From ¥1850 per hour

Reports to: The Rides Guest Services Manager

The Role:
As a Backcountry Guest Services & Rental Specialist, your dual responsibility will be to represent and coordinate our backcountry guiding services to outdoor enthusiasts and ensure the smooth operation of our backcountry rental services by providing excellent customer service by fitting our customers with equipment selection and fitting.

You will work closely with clients, reservations and the guiding team to deliver elevated backcountry adventures.


Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Guest Services

  • Possess a deep knowledge of our BC guiding services and the local area.
  • Engage with clients to understand their backcountry goals, skill levels, and preferences.
  • Provide knowledgeable recommendations and guidance on suitable backcountry guiding options based on client objectives.
  • Process walk-in bookings, ensuring accurate recording of reservations, payments, and required paperwork.

Client Engagement

  • Conduct thorough consultations to assess client fitness, experience, and equipment requirements for safe backcountry adventures, and consult with the lead guide to assist in tour planning.
  • Receive and review all pre-trip information and documentation shared between the reservations team and the guest before the tour date to ensure a seamless delivery.
  • Provide day-of support to clients, addressing any concerns or changes, and act on any urgent on-the-day items flagged by the reservations team.

Trip Planning

  • Collaborate with the guiding team to ensure recommended experiences align with client preferences and skill level.
  • Consult with the Reservations team regarding options for routes, ski areas and terrain recommendations.
  • Review guide allocation to ensure they are appropriate and manage on the day reallocations as needed.
  • Adapt itineraries mid-trip to meet changing weather conditions or guest preferences.

Rental Fitting

  • Assist customers in selecting appropriate backcountry equipment based on their skill level, preferences, and intended activities.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations on suitable gear, including skis, snowboards, bindings, boots, avalanche safety equipment, clothing, and additional equipment needed for their tour.
  • Conduct fitting sessions to ensure proper sizing and adjustment of equipment.
  • Process sales and rental transactions accurately and efficiently using EasyRent.
  • Keep the BC rental store organised/tidy and customer-ready at all times.


Process returns & equipment maintenance

  • Assist customers with rental equipment returns and inspections.
  • Accurately finalise customer accounts on EasyRent.
  • Transfer gear to be tuned by our workshop team.
  • Store skins properly to dry & organise them back into appropriate bags/storage ready for the next guest
  • Inspect all equipment, organise repairs, maintain equipment, and store correctly, ensuring everything is ready for the next guest.

Customer Experience/Education

  • Educate customers on proper equipment use, safety procedures, and maintenance best practices.
  • Conduct equipment demonstrations and offer tips and techniques to enhance the backcountry experience.

What you need to succeed:

To be successful as a Rides Backcountry Guest Services & Rental Team member, you must be able to work with minimal supervision under pressure and have excellent customer service skills. Additionally, you should be a passionate and knowledgeable backcountry enthusiast with experience in the Niseko and/or Furano region.

  • Previous experience in guest services, rentals, or maintenance of backcountry equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of backcountry skiing and snowboarding, including equipment - bindings, boots, skis/snowboards, and avalanche safety gear.
  • Strong technical skills and familiarity with equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Collaborative approach to work, and comfortable working across multiple teams.
  • Detail-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritise tasks.
  • Familiarity with local and regional backcountry destinations, terrain, and conditions is highly desirable.
