Job Description

Role Overview:
The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and VP of Engineering is the leader responsible for defining and executing the company’s technology strategy, ensuring the organization’s technical capabilities directly enable business growth, operational scale, and long‑term competitiveness. This role oversees engineering, architecture, infrastructure, and technology operations, while partnering closely with the CEO and executive team to translate business priorities into a coherent technical roadmap.

The CTO also partners with IT and AI leaders to ensure the company’s AI strategy is fully supported by the right engineering foundations, data structures, and technical capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technology & Architecture Strategy — Define the long-term technology vision and architecture standards that support product innovation and operational scale, in partnership with platform leadership.

• Management of Short and Long- Range Technology Priorities— Demonstrate leadership in managing the natural tension between near‑term development and long‑horizon research and development, ensuring disciplined prioritization to deliver results across both timelines.

• Engineering Leadership — Lead high performing engineering teams with clear expectations, delivery discipline, and strong execution standards.

• Technical Design & Security Guidance — Provide direction on technical design and engineering standards, collaborating with platform and IT leaders to ensure alignment with business needs.

• AI Partnership & Enablement — Collaborate with IT and AI leaders to ensure engineering, data, and system decisions enable successful AI adoption across the company.

• Product & Business Partnership — Partner with Product Groups, Operations, and Go-to-Market leaders to align technology investments with business priorities and customer needs.

• Operational Excellence — Implement engineering processes, quality standards, release management, and reliability practices that ensure predictable delivery and system stability.

• Data & Risk Management — Support IT and Cyber Security team in maintaining strong data governance, compliance, and risk mitigation across technology domains.

• Innovation & Emerging Technology — Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies (automation, cloud modernization, developer productivity tools) to accelerate business outcomes.

• Vendor & Technology Partnership Management — Partner with platform and IT leaders on vendor relationships, cloud platforms, and external partners to ensure cohesive, scalable solutions.

• Budget & Resource Planning — Own technology budgeting, capacity planning, and investment prioritization.

• Executive Communication — Provide clear, concise updates to the CEO, board, and executive team on technology strategy, risks, and progress.

• Communicates complex technical topics in a simple, business aligned manner.

• Strategic Horizon Balancing — Demonstrated ability to lead through the natural tension between near‑term product delivery and long‑horizon research and development, exercising sound judgment to set priorities, allocate resources, and deliver results across both timelines.

• Ensures engineering and system decisions support and enable the company’s AI strategy.

• Provides clear technical direction on architecture, engineering standards, and security posture, working closely with platform and IT counterparts to ensure alignment with company goals.

Qualifications

  • Visionary technology leader with 15+ years of experience shaping technology strategy, leading global engineering organizations, and delivering transformative business outcomes.

  • Proven track record of scaling technology platforms, processes, and teams to support rapid growth, operational efficiency, and market expansion.

  • Strong technical foundation across cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise architecture, data platforms, and emerging AI technologies, with the ability to balance innovation, risk management, and execution.

  • Trusted advisor to executive leadership and boards of directors, capable of influencing strategic decisions and aligning technology investments with business priorities.

  • Collaborative leader experienced in driving cross-functional alignment across Product, Engineering, IT, Data, AI, Security, and Operations to accelerate innovation and achieve enterprise objectives.

Additional Information

The role is open to both Japan-based candidates and globally based leaders who can commit to a 2 to 3-year assignment in Japan to support business and organizational objectives.
