About the role

We are looking for a pro-active, motivated and result oriented Client Underwriter. You will take responsibility for underwriting and account management for P&C treaty reinsurance with clients in Japan, including kyosai clients (Japanese mutual insurers).

You will engage with clients, brokers and industry associations on strategic, commercial and technical topics, building long term relationships. With an entrepreneurial mindset, you will identify and originate new opportunities to support your clients, differentiating Swiss Re and delivering the full value of the organization.

Main tasks

• Develop and champion client relationships across organizational levels
• Identify opportunities with existing and new clients to grow the business
• Perform end-to-end underwriting analysis for proportional and non-proportional treaty business in property and casualty lines, including pricing, contracts review and basic structuring
• Work towards individual underwriting authority, in order to make underwriting decisions within respective authority level in accordance with company guidelines and standards
• Negotiate pricing and terms for Swiss Re's participation in renewing and new reinsurance treaties
• Build, maintain and further develop a strong internal and external network, including relationships with clients, brokers and industry associations

About the team

Client Underwriting Japan is a self-contained team in Tokyo, responsible for Swiss Re's Property and Casualty business with domestic clients in Japan. We benefit from an inclusive office environment where collaboration and fun help create strong bonds. You will work closely alongside an experienced team of Client Underwriters, with access to Swiss Re's full cross-functional presence locally and across the broader global organisation. You will report to the Head of Client Underwriting Japan.

About you

Required

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent, ideally in Engineering, Actuarial or Natural Science
• 3+ years of experience in the (re)insurance industry
• External communication skills (comfortable to represent Swiss Re with clients and brokers)
• Quantitative / analytical skills (expected to attain individual underwriting authority)
• Languages: Mother tongue or fully proficient in Japanese, good English skills

Preferred

• P&C treaty underwriting experience, demonstrated commercial judgement in risk selection/evaluation as well as a flair for wording and costing issues
• Client focus and consultancy skills (listen, ask right questions and "connect the dots")
• Financial acumen and relevant corporate finance knowledge
• Commercial negotiation and sales skills, ability to successfully handle conflicts, at ease navigating ambiguity
• Understanding of the end-to-end (re)insurance value chain and relevant market knowledge
• Entrepreneurial mindset (sense of urgency, cost consciousness and personal risk taking)
• Organizational skills, ability to work independently including prioritizing own workload through peak periods
• Existing network within Japanese P&C (re)insurance industry
