We are looking for an experienced and proactive EHS & Facility Engineering Specialist to support and strengthen environmental, health, safety, and facility operations at our Ichikawa Distribution Center. The successful candidate will work with a meaningful degree of independence, applying established expertise to manage safety programs, coordinate facility activities, and engage effectively with both local and global stakeholders. This role plays a key part in maintaining a safe, compliant, and operationally sound distribution environment.
1. Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
Lead and support site-level EHS activities that reinforce workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and operational stability at Ichikawa DC.
- Own and manage safety KPIs, ensuring consistent tracking, timely follow-up, and data-driven continuous improvement of site safety performance.
- Drive near-miss reporting culture by promoting awareness, tracking submissions, conducting trend analysis, and leading follow-up actions.
- Develop, review, and maintain risk assessments (RAs) for warehouse operations, facility-related work, and workplace modifications.
- Prepare and deliver EHS-related communications and presentations to site management and global stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
- Lead or actively support incident investigations, corrective action tracking, safety patrols, and broader safety awareness initiatives.
- Collaborate with regional and global EHS teams to ensure site activities are aligned with corporate standards, policies, and expectations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable regulations and company policies governing chemical handling, hazardous materials management, and site safety requirements.
2. Facility Engineering Coordination
Coordinate facility and engineering activities at Ichikawa DC in close collaboration with the Facility Engineering team based at Atsugi DC, ensuring safe, stable, and efficient site operations.
- Lead to track the spending actual and report in the weekly and monthly. Conscious to the cost spent, and lead the cost saving initiatives.
- Support facility and engineering activities including maintenance, repair work, inspections, and vendor management for buildings, utilities, and site infrastructure.
- Serve as a reliable coordination point for facility-related issues, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution in collaboration with internal stakeholders and external contractors.
- Support the planning and execution of facility modifications, equipment upgrades, and workplace improvement initiatives.
- Ensure that all facility-related activities are properly communicated, tracked, and aligned with both operational needs and safety requirements.
3. Collaboration & Leadership Behaviours
Demonstrate Merck’s leadership behaviours and contribute as a reliable, hands-on partner within a cross-functional supply chain environment.
- Engage at the Gemba level to develop a thorough understanding of on-site conditions, proactively identify risks, and drive practical, sustainable improvements.
- Build effective working relationships with local and global stakeholders to align priorities and support facility-related projects and initiatives.
- Promote a culture of teamwork, integrity, and proactive problem-solving within operational teams, in line with Merck’s leadership principles.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3–5 years of professional experience in EHS, facility engineering, facility management, warehouse operations, or a related operational environment.
- Demonstrated experience in safety KPI management, near-miss reporting processes, and risk assessment development.
- Proven ability to prepare and present materials to global stakeholders in a professional business setting.
- Hands-on experience in facility coordination, vendor management, maintenance follow-up, or engineering support roles.
Core Competencies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions in both domestic and international contexts.
- Native or business-level Japanese proficiency; business-level English proficiency required for communication within global teams.
- Self-directed and accountable, with a track record of following through on commitments and driving improvements independently.
EHS-Specific Requirements
- Solid understanding of occupational safety principles, incident prevention methodologies, and risk management frameworks.
- Ability to analyse safety data and translate findings into concrete, prioritised improvement actions.
- Confidence in presenting safety-related topics clearly to both local operational teams and global audiences.
- Experience in chemical handling, hazardous materials management, and related compliance practices is an advantage.
- Possession of Japanese EHS certifications — such as Toxic and Deleterious Substances Handling Supervisor or Class 4 Hazardous Materials Handler — is a plus.
Facility Engineering-Specific Requirements
- Practical understanding of building systems, utilities management, and site infrastructure maintenance.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with multiple vendors and internal stakeholders across concurrent workstreams.
- Strong sense of ownership in following through on repairs, inspections, and facility improvement actions to completion.
