EC Marketplace Development Department (ECMPD) is a tech division under Rakuten Commerce & Marketing Company of Rakuten Group, Inc. We are responsible for developing and enhancing our online system to support our core business, Rakuten Ichiba.
Rakuten Ichiba is one of the largest internet shopping malls in Japan with 5.6 trillion sales in 2022 and our business is growing year on year. We aim to provide the best shopping entertainment for our shoppers and empower our partners in Rakuten Ichiba.

Position Details
- Lead system software development team as a Senior Engineer for development/operational product of navigation services in Rakuten Ichiba
- Project planning (Create milestone, system delivery and development budget)
- Project management (Progress management, Reporting and Issue management)
- Communication with stakeholders (Negotiation with other teams, and scheduling)
- QA management (Arrangement with QA team, Define QA scope, Scheduling)
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Technical Leadership: Experience in defining the ideal state for technology, quality, operations, and processes, and leading the resolution of complex technical challenges and technical decision-making.
- System Ownership: Experience taking responsibility for production services, leading incident response, root cause analysis, recurrence prevention, and continuous quality improvement.
- Team Building & Talent Development: Experience in delegating tasks and authority appropriately to foster member growth, and enhancing team autonomy and performance.
- Strategic Execution: Ability to translate high-level organizational goals into team objectives and execution plans, clarifying priorities to achieve organizational targets.
- Execution Management: Ability to work backward from goals, clearly defining responsibilities, deadlines, issues, and risks while driving tasks with high transparency.
- Business/Technical Translation: Ability to explain technical issues as business risks or opportunities, and translate business requirements into actionable technical tasks.
- Leadership & Followership: Ability to facilitate two-way communication regarding policies that may be difficult to accept, moving the organization forward through constructive proposals and consensus-building.
- Senior Stakeholder Communication: Ability to concisely and logically explain technical issues, business impacts, risks, and recommendations to executive management.
- Global Communication: Ability to use English to engage in technical discussions, coordination, and reporting with members and stakeholders from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Desired Qualifications:
- Large-Scale Service Experience: Experience leading the design, development, and operation of high-traffic and business-critical services.
- EC Domain Experience: Development and operational experience in large-scale commerce areas such as EC, marketplaces, payments, orders, inventory, and search.
- Technical Transformation Experience: Experience leading the modernization of legacy systems, architectural migration, technical standardization, and development platform improvement.
- Cross-Organizational Leadership: Experience leading cross-functional efforts across multiple development teams and related departments to solve common issues and promote technical initiatives.
- Technical Stack Affinity: Experience in system design, development, and operation using the organization's current tech stack, including Java, Spring Framework, and React.
- Global Team Experience: Experience leading teams composed of engineers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Engineering Management Experience: People management experience, including hiring, performance evaluation, talent development, and goal setting.
