About the job:
Job Purpose & Objectives
To originate, develop and manage relationships with major Japanese financial institutions (banks, securities firms, insurance companies, asset managers and NBFIs), both domestically and in their overseas offices.
To drive revenue growth and profitability through strategic relationship management and coordinated cross-selling of the Bank’s global product capabilities.
To act as the senior relationship lead for assigned FI clients, delivering holistic coverage across lending, transaction banking, markets, structured solutions, and sustainability-related initiatives.
To position the Bank as a long-term strategic partner to Japanese financial institutions within BBVA’s global footprint.
Assist to help with local subsidiaries of international groups that BBVA covers globally
Key Responsibilities
Relationship Management & Origination
Lead and manage a portfolio of top-tier Japanese financial institutions, maintaining senior-level engagement (C-suite, treasury, international, structured finance, and capital markets teams).
Develop and execute account strategies aligned with client priorities, including international expansion, capital optimization, digital transformation, and sustainability initiatives.
Originate new business opportunities across lending, trade finance, structured finance, debt capital markets, syndicated loans, risk distribution, derivatives, and other wholesale banking products.
Identify cross-border opportunities between Japanese FIs and BBVA’s core markets (Europe, the Americas, and other strategic corridors).
Business Development & Cross-Selling
Coordinate closely with product specialists (DCM, Syndications, Global Markets, Transaction Banking, Structured Finance, Sustainable Finance, etc.) to structure tailored solutions.
Maximize wallet share and returns by proactively cross-selling and deepening multi-product relationships.
Lead RFP responses, pitch materials, and strategic proposals to clients.
Monitor market developments and competitive landscape within the Japanese FI sector.
Assume dual hatted responsibility between the branch and BBVA Japan Securities to enhance cross sell opportunities
Credit & Risk Management
Oversee credit exposure to assigned FI clients, ensuring sound credit quality and disciplined risk management.
Deliver high-quality credit analysis and underwriting recommendations in line with internal risk policies.
Monitor financial performance, ratings, regulatory developments, and sector trends affecting Japanese financial institutions.
Ensure proper structuring, pricing discipline, and capital allocation optimization.
Internal Coordination & Governance
Act as the primary coordination point between Tokyo and global teams to ensure seamless execution of cross-border mandates.
Liaise with Risk, Legal, Compliance, and Operations to ensure full adherence to regulatory, documentation, and KYC requirements.
Prepare internal reports, pipeline updates, revenue forecasts, and strategic reviews for senior management.
Contribute to strategic planning for the Japan FI franchise.
Sustainability & Strategic Advisory
Engage clients on ESG, transition finance, and sustainable funding initiatives.
Identify opportunities in green bonds, sustainability-linked loans, transition finance, and advisory mandates aligned with Japanese regulatory and market developments.
Job Specifications
Qualifications & Experience
University degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration or related discipline; MBA or relevant postgraduate degree preferred.
10+ years of experience in financial institutions coverage, corporate banking, or investment banking with a focus on Japanese FIs.
Profound understanding of target clients’ global business strategies and internal decision-making dynamics.
Proven track record of revenue origination and senior relationship management.
Strong understanding of Japanese banking sector regulations, capital markets, and cross-border transaction structures.
Experience working in an international banking environment is highly preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
Deep knowledge of FI business models (banks, securities, insurers, asset managers).
Strong credit analysis and financial statement interpretation skills.
Strategic thinker with strong commercial acumen and deal origination capability.
Ability to coordinate complex, multi-product and cross-border transactions.
High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Well-versed in relevant laws and regulations.
Language
Fluency in Japanese and English (written and spoken) is required.
Additional language skills are a plus.
