Human Disease Research Segment Marketing Manager, Japan

Position Summary:

The Human Disease Research Segment Manager is a key position within the Japan Marketing team in the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa (AMEA) regional marketing organization. This role is responsible for developing managing and implementing our Japan commercialisation and go-to-market strategies for Illumina’s core technologies in research and academia, particularly around cancer and genetic disease research, cell and molecular biology and basic microbiology applications. The main tasks include assessment of the market dynamics, understanding customer requirements, and establishing relationships with stakeholders (KOLs, academic institutions, service providers, government bodies, and internal Illumina resources) in order to establish and implement a go-to-market strategy for the region. The role also involves working with the Japan and AMEA marketing teams to establish compelling messaging and positioning for Illumina products and services in these markets, create awareness, generate demand, and enable the sales team through guidance, tools and training. The role also provides support to facilitate and enable the Japan commercial team and its dealers to help reach the company’s revenue goals and the translation of market insights and product knowledge into competitive strategies and tactics.

The position includes coordination with Illumina’s global and regional segment marketing teams, regional marketing programs, product management, digital and events teams as well as other internal stakeholders to ensure that strategies are aligned and executed across groups. This person acts as the regional product Subject Matter Expert (SME).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Primary point of contact for utilization of Illumina technologies in research and academia, facilitating inbound and outbound communication, and ensuring alignment with internal stakeholders.
  • Solicit and consolidate input from customers and field staff within the region to provide in-depth market analysis and insight regarding customer and market needs, issues and opportunities.
  • Assist field district marketing & sales teams by providing guidance for product messaging and positioning and identifying target customers.
  • Provide market information and analysis to the AMEA regional directors/managers and/or Global Product Managers on a regular basis (monthly and/or quarterly).
  • Proactively identify and enhance opportunities to improve customer satisfaction with Illumina’s products through sound technical, product and application knowledge.
  • Work with other regional marketing staff to coordinate the planning and execution of systems and applications product launches within the district, and to plan and execute other marketing communications, events and promotional activities.
  • Coordinate local collaborations and proof-of-principle studies to generate proof statements and customer advocates for our technologies.
  • Assess training needs and coordinate training opportunities across the district for both direct and indirect sales channels.
  • Provide mentoring and assistance to junior/new marketing team members.

Position Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in marketing, sales and/or market development in life sciences, or related industries required with a minium of 3-5 years of experience in Marketing within the Life Science sector.
  • Experience in new product development or product commercialization is an advantage
  • Experience and understanding of genomic technologies and how they can be utilized in the academic and research markets
  • The ability to evaluate new market opportunities.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Strong presentation skills, negotiation skills and ability to persuade
  • Proven ability to lead and influence a broad spectrum of constituents (product management, sales, etc.) with divergent interests in order to create a defined and focused course of action

Preferred Experience/Education/Skills:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience in marketing, sales, and/or market development in scientific, medical, life sciences or related industries with a Bachelor’s degree; or 5 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD without experience; or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience in new product development or product commercialization is an advantage
