Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Patent Attorney supporting the Johnson & Johnson MedTech and Pharm businesses in Japan, to be located in Tokyo.
SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing business partners with strategic legal advice and counsel in intellectual property and relevant laws to advance business interests while protecting the company's rights, interests and reputation. The position reports to Legal Director Patent Japan.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Work with business clients in Japan and colleagues in the Johnson & Johnson Law Department across the world to support business opportunities; provide strategic proactive and reactive legal advice on a wide range of proposed business initiatives and transactions primarily focused on the transfer of intellectual property beneficial to the business; advise and assist in optimizing exclusivity for products across the MedTech and pharmaceutical sectors; draft and review contracts; handle and solve disputes to protect the company's rights. The position also involves conducting freedom to operate studies and advising the business accordingly; participating in the identification of inventions and filing patent applications accordingly; managing outside counsel relationships and activities; serving on and leading project teams and committees to assess and implement projects in the local business and the J&J Law Department. Some domestic and international travel is required.
OTHER ACTIVITIES: Deliver intellectual property trainings to business clients to enhance knowledge. The position involves other administrative works related to the above.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: University degree in scientific or technical field and comfortable working with technical substance from all fields; registration as a Japanese Patent Attorney is desirable but preparation to become the Japanese Patent Attorney is acceptable; 3 years experience in IP field is required. 8 years experience in IP field and work experience with a wide range of clients is preferred; challenge the status quo and proactively take leadership of various initiatives, connect relevant stakeholders and shape strategies having flexible thinking and excellent analytical skills; desire to work in a fast-paced environment, meet stringent timelines, and handle multiple demands simultaneously; must be a self-starter with a positive attitude and the ability to work both independently and as a team member; must be able to develop excellent client relationships across all levels of a matrix organization. Proficiency in English (at least in written English) and Japanese (both in written and spoken Japanese) is required.
