Senior Process Engineer, MSAT – Single Use & Integrated Platform Solutions
Position Summary
The Senior Process Engineer (MSAT) serves as a subject matter expert in large-scale bioprocessing and biomanufacturing, with a specialized focus on Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF), clarification, virus filtration, and Process Analytical Technology (PAT). This role delivers advanced technical support, drives thought leadership, and enables commercial success through deep scientific expertise and customer-centric engagement across the Japanese biopharmaceutical market.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Expertise & Process Support
- Act as a recognized expert in large-scale bioprocessing with emphasis on TFF, clarification, virus filtration, and PAT technologies (e.g., Raman spectroscopy analyzers, auto-sampling systems) across the full bioprocessing workflow.
- Design and execute hands-on process development, scale-up, and implementation work for advanced analytical equipment (e.g., ProCellics Raman Analyzer with Bio4C Raman Software and MAST® Autosampling Solution) following best-practice protocols.
- Lead troubleshooting, root-cause investigations, and scale-down/scale-up studies related to processes and equipment.
- CapEx Investment & Project Consulting
- Collaborate with customers’ technical and engineering teams to provide consultative and hands-on guidance for CapEx investment projects and facility design, including mass balance calculations.
- Provide complex technical consultation to support clients’ capital investment decisions, leveraging scientific knowledge, modeling, and engineering design expertise.
- Thought Leadership & Customer Engagement
- Deliver thought leadership activities including conference presentations, customer trainings, and webinars focused on single-use systems, PAT integration, and advanced biomanufacturing equipment.
- Build and maintain trusted partnerships with customers through direct engagement, offering high-level technical support aligned with their long-term equipment and process strategies.
- Ensure high-quality customer communication via teleconferences and face-to-face meetings regarding equipment performance and process details.
- Commercial & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Represent Merck as a technical expert within the commercial organization and drive best-in-class capabilities to enable winning commercial outcomes.
- Proactively capture and share Voice of Customer (VOC) insights with R&D, franchises, and commercial teams.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders including the commercial team and system manufacturing teams to address customer needs and ensure successful deployment.
- Identify and capture commercial opportunities using sales effectiveness tools.
Key Accountabilities
- Drive Merck product adoption, competitive conversion, and seeding wins to ensure business growth and market leadership in Japan.
- Defend Merck’s position with customers and provide strategic understanding of customer programs and plans (e.g., technology transfer).
- Share technical and process knowledge acquired from customers with internal teams to advance commercial opportunities into strategic impact.
- Lead and influence cross-functional teams without direct authority to deliver customer-centric outcomes.
Scope of Collaboration
- Internal: Regional Commercial Organization, Global TSS Peers, R&D, Franchise, Field Service, GSA, ISCO, Quality Teams.
- External: Customers, Industry Forums & Associations, Conferences, Regulators.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum Qualifications
- B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or related engineering/science field.
- Minimum 5 years of proven biopharmaceutical technical experience in manufacturing, pilot, and/or lab-scale environments.
- Strong foundation in science/engineering with hands-on engineering design sense.
- Substantial experience in scaling and implementation for biopharmaceutical processes.
- Excellent written and oral communication to diverse audiences.
- Commercial acumen with understanding of market needs/trends.
- Open-minded, customer-focused, and effective team player with experience in multicultural, matrix organizations.
- Essential competencies: customer centricity, strategic thinking, and an integrated mindset.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Technical mastery in one or more bioprocess applications, including process requirements, best practices, and industry standards.
- Functional knowledge of process controls (PLC, PCS), biopharma automation, and FDA data integrity guidelines.
- Experience with mass balance calculations, process flow diagrams (PFDs), and P&IDs.
- Demonstrated leadership in multi-workstream projects with diverse stakeholders.
