Process Safety and Risk Management (PS&RM) and Machine Safety (MS) Lead Engineer

Key Responsibilities

Process Safety and Risk Management

  • Facilitate Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Dust Hazard Analyses (DHA) for routine revalidations and capital projects; mentor site-based facilitators.
  • Serve as a process safety subject matter expert, providing technical guidance on risk identification, evaluation, and mitigation.
  • Guide sites in the application and interpretation of Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
  • Partner with site leadership, engineering, and EHS teams to drive measurable improvements in process safety performance.
  • Lead targeted initiatives to reduce risk associated with high-hazard materials, technologies, and operations.
  • Support and participate in audits, compliance reviews, and internal or external process safety assessments.
  • Contribute to process safety incident investigations, including incident classification, root cause analysis, and enterprise trend analysis.
  • Support the development and deployment of corporate process safety training programs for engineering and operations personnel.

Machine Safety

  • Support sites with implementation of machine safety programs, systems, processes, and equipment upgrades that improve safety and operational effectiveness.
  • Monitor site machine safety performance and troubleshoot safety-related issues.
  • Identify and promote best practices for machine safety design, operation, and maintenance in alignment with applicable standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and oversight during procurement, fabrication, and installation to ensure machine safety requirements are met.
  • Support the development and continual improvement of corporate engineering standards for machine safety and mechanical design.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in process safety and risk management in high-hazard manufacturing or chemical processing environments, including at least 5 years in plant technical support or equipment and systems design.
  • Strong working knowledge of international process safety standards and best practices.
  • Demonstrated experience applying HAZOP, LOPA, PHA, and DHA methodologies.
  • Proven experience in process safety auditing, compliance assurance, and management system implementation.
  • Background in machine safety evaluations, design reviews, and assessments.
  • Proficiency in engineering documentation and capital project execution.
  • Familiarity with regulatory requirements and RAGAGEPs, including ANSI, ISO, and EN standards.
  • In-depth understanding of the Qnity S1M Machine Safety Management Program and applicable local and international machine safety standards.
  • Ability to lead cross-functionally and influence at all organizational levels, including senior leadership.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Japanese and English.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong facilitation and collaboration capabilities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.

Preferred / Additional Attributes

  • Certification as a Process Safety Professional, such as CCPS or equivalent.
  • Experience in project engineering and capital project risk reviews.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to work effectively in global, multicultural environments.
  • Self-directed, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
