Role Purpose:
Deliver engaging, high-quality English language lessons that support effective learning and contribute to the British Council's cultural relations mission.
The British Council Tokyo Teaching Centre is seeking qualified and experienced teachers to join our offsite Junior High School teaching team. This hourly paid role offers 12–18 teaching hours per week, Monday to Friday during school terms, with final schedules confirmed during onboarding.
Main Accountabilities:
This is an exciting opportunity to deliver engaging, high-quality English language teaching while contributing to the British Council's mission of building connections, understanding, and trust through education and cultural relations.
As a Project-Based Hourly Paid Teacher, you will plan, prepare, and deliver learner-centred English language lessons that meet the needs of diverse learners and reflect the British Council's Global Teaching Standards. You will create inclusive and motivating learning environments, monitor learner progress, provide constructive feedback, and encourage learner autonomy to support successful learning outcomes.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues to support the ongoing development of courses, teaching materials, and learning services. The role also involves participating in staff meetings, completing teaching-related administrative tasks, supporting school activities, and contributing to local marketing initiatives by promoting the British Council's programmes and delivering an excellent customer experience.
Building positive relationships with learners, colleagues, and stakeholders is central to this role. You will help learners develop not only their English language skills but also their understanding of the UK and opportunities for intercultural engagement through classroom and extracurricular activities.
As a member of the British Council teaching community, you will actively engage in professional development and performance management to maintain high standards of teaching and remain at the forefront of English Language Teaching (ELT) best practice. You will be expected to demonstrate strong subject knowledge, deliver well-planned and engaging lessons, make effective use of assessment and feedback, manage teaching resources efficiently, and uphold the highest professional standards.
The successful candidate will also ensure full compliance with the British Council's policies relating to safeguarding, data protection, equality, diversity and inclusion, special educational needs and disability (SEND), and health and safety.
