Regional Category Buyer (Energy, Utility & Performance Chemicals) - Japan

Objectives of the Position:

  • Purchase Energy and utility products – defined here as Natural Gas, Industrial Gas, Electricity and Renewable Energy for Japan
  • Lead the process of Negotiation, implementation and management of complex long-term agreements of energy products for BASF sites in Japan
  • Purchase Performance chemicals such as Glycols, Polyols and other categories for Japan
  • Manage supplier relationships and support the needs of internal business partners
  • Routinely engage with BASF production sites, business units and suppliers to ensure reliable supply
  • Market analysis of the relevant products

Main Areas of Responsibilities and Key Activities:

  • Negotiate the energy and utility contracts in Japan
  • Implementation of the contracts for energy and utility purchase
  • Negotiate the performance chemical purchase for assigned products in Japan
  • Familiarity of the following aspects is highly preferred, especially for the Natural Gas, Industrial Gas, Electricity and Renewable Energy in Japan:
    • Technical: Familiarity with the technical / operational set-up for Natural Gas, Industrial Gas, Electricity and Renewable Energy
    • Commercial: Ability to develop relevant cost-based and/or market-based pricing mechanisms, depending on the products, including quantification of both fixed and variable costs and other contractual arrangements such as to achieve the best Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
    • Contractual: Develop & negotiate relevant contractual clauses to achieve results that protects the interests of BASF
    • Market development: Awareness of current regulatory framework, and also understanding of the current development (eg. Market Reform planned by the government) and how to best position BASF for the future, which may also include providing support for advocacy and discussion with the relevant stakeholders
    • Sustainability: Promote Energy Transformation in BASF Japan under BASF 2050 net-zero emission target
  • Lead complex negotiations, alone or as part of a team, to ensure the most competitive supply for BASF in the energy products. Provide support and participate for “make vs. buy” (esp. for downstream energy products) and/or “supply chain options”
  • Analyze complex contracts and supply setups to propose cost effective and sustainable supply arrangements for energy products
  • Work closely with BASF production sites, business units and global procurement network to develop and implement sourcing strategies for energy products and Performance & Functional materials.
  • Management of supplier relationships as well as management of daily procurement tasks to ensure the supply of energy products and Performance & Functional materials are available for the day-to-day operation, such as validate monthly invoices, approving purchase orders and trouble shooting

Minimum Education and Qualification required for the Position:

  • University degree with a focus in Energy, Chemistry, Engineering or Business
  • 4+ years of working experience in Business Management or Procurement related to the chemical industry, energy industry or industrial gases
  • Experience in negotiating complex, long-term contracts
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to manage relationships with internal partners and suppliers on all levels –experience of dealing with suppliers who have dominant market position would be highly desirable
  • Previous procurement-specific experience of energy products is an advantage, but not a precondition. Candidates with familiarity on the relevant aspects but has been working on different roles (business development, marketing, supply chain, etc) would be considered accordingly
  • Ability to lead and influence others; demonstrated problem-solving skills with business value creation know-how & high degree of entrepreneurial drive
  • Japanese native speaker and excellent level of oral & written English
