The role is responsible for developing market analysis capabilities in Japan, aligned with stakeholder needs (Trading, Origination, APAC Management), and is strategic to the growth of ENGIE’s activities in Japan. The role combines strategic and operational responsibilities, delivering actionable short to medium-term analysis while building forward-looking market views.

Key Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible and accountable for achieving the following outcomes which can evolve to align with the business’ strategic goals.

Strategic

  • Build and progressively develop market analysis capabilities in Japan, ensuring alignment with ENGIE’s commercial priorities and growth ambitions in the region.
  • Develop a strong understanding of stakeholder needs across Trading, Origination, and APAC Management, translating these into a clear and prioritised market analysis roadmap.
  • Act as the focal point for market analysis in Japan within the Market Analysis Expertise Centre, leveraging methodologies, tools, and best practices from global teams while ensuring local relevance.
  • Collaborate closely with global market analysis teams to share insights, ensure consistency of views, and contribute to ENGIE’s global perspective on energy markets.
  • Contribute to shaping market views and strategic direction for Japan by providing forward-looking insights that support commercial positioning and future growth areas (including BESS and structured offtake opportunities).

Commercial & Trading Support

  • Deliver timely and high-quality analysis to support day-to-day trading and portfolio decisions, including market fundamentals, price drivers, and short-term outlooks.
  • Develop and maintain reports and tools tailored to trading and commercial teams, focusing on Japanese electricity markets and relevant commodities.
  • Analyse market developments (supply-demand dynamics, fuel prices, weather, outages, interconnections, regulatory changes) to identify risks and opportunities.

Market Analysis & Capability Development

  • Build and maintain core market datasets, dashboards, and analytical frameworks for the Japanese energy market, to support supply and demand fundamental balances.
  • Develop forward-looking market views across different time horizons, with an initial focus on short- to medium-term horizons.
  • Ensure proper data management and governance, aligned with the standards of the organization.
  • Progressively contribute to the development of longer-term market analysis capabilities to support future investment decisions, including BESS and PPA offtake opportunities.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and policy changes in Japan, assessing their implications for ENGIE’s commercial and trading activities.

Reporting and Communication

  • Deliver regular market reports (daily, weekly, monthly) tailored to trading, commercial teams and management.
  • Provide ad-hoc analysis on significant or unexpected market events to support rapid decision-making.
  • Engage effectively with internal stakeholders to communicate key insights in a clear, concise, and actionable manner.
  • Assist in analysing and communicating external publications, market forecasts, and industry developments to support ENGIE’s market positioning
  • Contribute to global market analysis exchanges and represent the Japan perspective within ENGIE’s global community

    Qualifications

    • Tertiary degree in Finance, Mathematics, business, economics or related discipline.

    Technical Skills & Experience

    • 5 to 10 years relevant experience in energy market analysis or closely related fields.
    • Strong understanding of power market fundamentals (e.g. supply/demand, fuel markets, weather, outages) ; knowledge of Japanese energy markets is highly advantageous.
    • Proven ability to deliver actionable insights in a trading or commercial environment.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and communicate findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
    • Experience building or maintaining analytical tools, models, or dashboards.
    • Experience using analytical/programming tools such as Python is mandatory
    • Fluency in both English (TOEIC 850+) and Japanese (JLPT N1) is mandatory
