【Alexion Japan】Head of Medical Affairs, Rare Bone & Endocrine Disorders, Rare Tumours

This is what you will do:

This position, Head of Medical Affairs Rare Bone & Endocrine Disorders, Rare Tumours will provide strategic leadership to Alexion’s assigned therapeutic area portfolio, including in-line and pipeline assets. Responsible for providing deep scientific and medical expertise and a strong understanding of disease biology, patient journey, and treatment landscape in the responsible therapeutic area. Responsible for the development and implementation of the strategic plans for multiple compounds and indications in a strongly matrixed environment with effective cross-functional collaboration.

This role will collaborate with Global, Regional and Japan Medical Affairs stakeholders to maximize patients’ outcomes by setting and continuously advancing the evidence-based medical standard of care.

Lead and develop Medical Leads, MSL leadership and broader matrix medical organization as applicable.

You will be responsible for:

Develop and implement local medical strategies and plans as well as the strategically aligned tactical plan (and oversee their execution) across assets, indications, lifecycle stages, and evidence-generation priorities within the responsible Rare Bone & Endocrine Disorders,Rare Tumours area. Will work cross-functionally as well as closely with the regions and countries to transform medical practice. Responsible for the following:

  • The Head of Medical Affairs Rare Bone & Endocrine Disorders, Rare Tumours ensures solid scientific medical planning and execution to positively impact outcomes for patients within the responsible disease area
  • Responsible for ensuring the quality of medical strategies in Japan in alignment with Alexion's corporate and brand strategies.
  • Accountable for day-to-day operations execution, ensuring the quality and strategic alignment of medical activities for building local evidence and trust with external experts, healthcare professionals, patient communities, and internal stakeholders.
  • Represent Japan Medical Affairs for the responsible therapeutic area at relevant Global and Japan Product Teams.
  • Leads the organization to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of operations through continuous improvement approaches, formulating and developing strategic directions, business/resource planning, appropriate budget management, and leadership of medical organizations.
  • Ensures that the organization’s strategy is aligned with global and regional medical strategies and enterprise priorities for the relevant therapeutic area.
  • Responsible for related HR activities such as talent development, evaluation, and recruitment.
  • Partners cross-functionally with Commercial, Market Access, Clinical Development, Regulatory, Safety, and other relevant functions.
  • As a member of the Medical Affairs Leadership Team (MALT), this role contributes to the success of the entire medical department across all functions and roles, embedding Alexion’s corporate values, culture, and vision across the broader medical organization.
  • Ensure that the medical organization is a trusted cross-functional partner to Commercial and other relevant functions, through effective internal communication, participation in the JLC, cross-functional engagement, and execution of medical activities.
  • Escalate key issues and present recommendations/solutions to the Medical Leadership Team (MALT) and/or JLC as necessary.

You will need to have:

  • Must have MD, PhD, or PharmD level degree or equivalent
  • Must have experience in a Global or International Medical Affairs function (5+ years)
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Experience and ability to work in a matrixed cross-functional environment, both internally and remotely
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to drive results as an effective team member and project leader.
  • Proven ability to manage budget and resources
  • Strong business acumen
  • Ability to build effective partnerships between HQ and affiliates
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changing conditions
  • Excellent problem solving, organizational, and negotiating skills
  • Must demonstrate energy and enthusiasm, bringing a positive approach to challenges, along with a strong sense of ethics and responsibility
  • Travel required up to 25%

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Scientific and technical acumen in the relevant therapeutic area
  • Understanding of evidence generation, health economics and outcomes research, and access/reimbursement environment
  • Understanding of global and local healthcare environments, stakeholder needs, and access considerations
