Netflix seeks a seasoned, intellectually curious business and legal affairs executive to join our team in Tokyo. This role will lead the business and legal affairs function for our Japan content content initiative that licenses and commissions Japanese films and series for Netflix’s global streaming service.
The successful candidate will serve as a key collaborator to Netflix’s Japanese content team and will be responsible for providing clear, actionable, and strategic business and legal affairs advice to drive business objectives. They will be responsible for structuring, negotiating, drafting, and closing content deals; providing legal support for the production of Japanese films and series; managing music business affairs and music clearance for film and series content; and building and managing internal and external relationships with key content and production partners.
This role will lead and manage a team of lawyers and non-lawyers responsible for handling business and legal affairs across Netflix’s slate of Japanese content, including anime, live, non-fiction, and scripted. As this will be a leadership position, the candidate will be responsible for building and maintaining a high-performance team culture, and for growing and developing members of the Japan business and legal affairs team to provide strategic, timely, impactful support and guidance to the business.

This position will be based in Tokyo, Japan.
Requirements:
- 7+ years experience drafting and negotiating contracts in the film or television industry in Japan (in licensing, production, financing, and/or distribution).
- Language fluency (spoken and written) in both Japanese and English, with the ability to communicate confidently and effectively in both languages.
- Experience managing a team.
- Experience advising on business and legal issues in the entertainment and media industry.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Serving as a business partner and key collaborator to Japanese content executives.
- Managing team structure/organization for the Japan business and legal affairs team.
- Overseeing growth and development of individual members of the Japan business and legal affairs team.
- Setting and communicating business and legal affairs strategy and developing tactical plans for execution.
- Providing clear, actionable, and strategic business and legal affairs advice.
- Deal structuring and contract drafting and negotiation in Japanese, with a focus on content licensing and acquisition, and on original content development and production.
- Conducting industry and territory-specific research.
- Working cross-functionally to develop and execute on industry innovations and to maintain alignment between departments.
