About the Role

The Senior Acoustics Research Engineer will work on the Experiential R&D team.

Experiential R&D is the automotive research division that focuses on sound quality development and user validation of technology applications across all Harman Automotive product lines. As a Senior Acoustics Research Engineer, you will be responsible for coordinating and executing benchmarking processes regionally, and reporting data output to both internal stakeholders and external customers. Additional responsibilities include, testing product hypotheses and providing technical recommendations based on user studies. You will work with analysts to identify market trends and opportunities for audio products and assist predevelopment activities. You will be responsible for managing acoustic test resources for the purposes of user research as well as representing the methods and test results directly to stakeholders.


What You Will Do

  • Work directly with a global team of engineers, researchers and programmers located in North America, Europe, China, Japan and India.
  • Conduct benchmarking activities according to Harman’s Automotive Benchmarking method.
  • Represent Harman’s proprietary benchmarking process to both internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Administer user studies focusing on sound quality perception for the purposes of product development, validation and competitive analysis.
  • Lead the creation of custom reports detailing your assessments of the data and recommendations.
  • Liaison directly with global engineering, sales and innovation leaders regarding matters of strategy and customer communication.
  • Qualify audio performance with subjective testing and create recommendations to achieve optimum audio performance.
  • Recruit and train listeners for purposes of gathering and maintaining sufficient listeners for sound quality studies.

What You Need

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in audio related discipline: Acoustics, Music Technology, Electrical Engineering, Applied Sciences, Programming.
  • 6 years of relevant acoustic science/engineering industry experience.
  • Understanding of theory and practice: acoustic systems design, signal processing algorithms (2-channel upmixers, immersion technology, multi-channel playback), acoustical environments (room and cabin acoustics), and listener perception (psychoacoustics).
  • Experience with collecting and analyzing user data.
  • Experience working with and presenting to customers regarding data analytics and strategies.
  • Extreme curiosity, problem solving and intellectual honesty.
  • Ability to work in a global matrixed organization and communicate professionally in written and verbal forms with all levels of the organization.

What is Nice to Have

  • Experience with large data systems, statistical analysis and machine learning methods.
