Global Trade & Customs Consulting (GTCC) is Maersk's specialized advisory practice dedicated to helping customers navigate the complexities of international trade, customs regulations, duty optimization, and global supply chain compliance.

We are seeking a highly experienced trade and customs professional to lead and expand our consulting business in Japan.

Purpose of the Role

The Senior Manager, Global Trade & Customs Consulting will be responsible for leading the growth and profitability of the GTCC business in Japan.

This position owns commercial performance, client development, consulting delivery excellence, and team leadership. The role serves as the primary subject matter expert and strategic advisor for customers while driving revenue growth and ensuring successful execution of consulting engagements.

The successful candidate will work closely with Commercial, Customs Services, Logistics & Services, Ocean, and Supply Chain teams to develop consulting opportunities and enhance customer value propositions.

Key Responsibilities

Business Ownership & Commercial Leadership

  • Own GTCC Japan revenue, gross profit, and financial performance targets.
  • Develop and execute annual business growth strategies aligned with regional and global GTCC objectives.
  • Build, manage, and maintain a robust sales pipeline through proactive business development activities.
  • Monitor sales performance, opportunity progression, and forecasting accuracy through Salesforce and other commercial management tools.
  • Review and approve consulting proposals, statements of work, pricing models, and commercial terms.
  • Drive profitability through effective project scoping, resource allocation, and delivery management.
  • Support regional GTCC initiatives and contribute to overall business planning.

Business Development

  • Identify and develop new consulting opportunities within existing and prospective customer accounts.
  • Engage directly with senior customer stakeholders, including Directors, General Managers, Supply Chain Leaders, Customs Managers, and Compliance Officers.
  • Lead customer presentations, workshops, and executive discussions.
  • Partner with commercial teams to position GTCC services as strategic solutions to customer challenges.
  • Build strong relationships with key stakeholders across priority customer accounts.
  • Drive cross-selling opportunities between GTCC and other Maersk products and services.

Consulting Project Leadership

  • Lead the delivery of complex customs and trade consulting engagements.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and with high customer satisfaction.

  • HS Classification Governance
  • Rules of Origin
  • FTA/EPA Optimization
  • AEO Programs
  • Trade Compliance Frameworks
  • Customs Audit Management
  • Duty Savings Programs
  • Supply Chain and Trade Process Reviews
  • Customs Risk Assessments
  • Review consulting deliverables to ensure technical accuracy and quality.

Subject Matter Expertise

  • Serve as the leading GTCC subject matter expert within Japan.
  • Monitor regulatory developments affecting international trade and customs operations.
  • Translate regulatory changes into practical business solutions for customers.
  • Develop thought leadership content and industry insights.
  • Represent Maersk at industry events, conferences, customer seminars, and trade associations.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Law, Economics, Business, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of experience in customs, trade compliance, logistics consulting, or related fields.
  • Proven experience managing customer-facing consulting engagements.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience supporting sales growth and business development.
  • Deep technical expertise in customs and international trade regulations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and presentation skills.
  • Native Japanese and professional English proficiency.

Preferred

  • Japanese Customs Broker License (Licensed Customs Specialist).
  • EPA/FTA certification or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in a Big Four consulting firm.
  • Experience leading consulting teams.
  • Knowledge of global customs compliance programs.
  • Experience with supply chain digitalization and trade technology solutions.
