Job Summary

The Application Engineer (AE) is responsible for managing the delivery of one or more processes, solutions and/or projects with a focus on quality and effective risk management. The AE contributes to continuous process improvement, the identification of innovative solutions through research and analysis, and the application of best practices. They are accountable for achieving their own targets which impact the immediate team. The AE will provide technical guidance to colleagues to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Designs, develops, delivers and maintains solutions or infrastructure
  • Captures user requirements and ensures design and technical specifications meet user and business requirements
  • Works closely with the Technical Product Manager to deliver a working solution within the EY landscape
  • Develops with software component reuse, consolidated platforms, environments, products with the goal reducing overall IT costs in mind.
  • Provides technical guidance to colleagues to ensure achieve agreed outcomes
  • Meets performance objectives and metrics set locally (client service, quality and risk management, sales and business growth, solution development and teaming etc.)
  • Provides appropriate development estimates.
  • Provides suggestions/feedback regarding application engineering methodologies, standards and leading practices.
  • Researches and evaluates alternative technical solutions and propose the most efficient and cost-effective solution
  • Maintains adherence to architectural standards/principles, global product-specific guidelines, usability design standards, etc.
  • Provides support during the transition to production.
  • Works closely with Technical Product Manager, infrastructure, information security, and operations to implement/build solutions as part of end-to-end projects. Supports the project during the transition phase.

Analytical/Decision Making Responsibilities:

  • Can identify and address less-to-more complex application engineering strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
  • Anticipates project issues with the potential to work with an AE lead to define the problem; identify possible causes; and work with the team to identify solutions; with guidance from the AE Lead selects and implements most appropriate solution.
  • Applies judgment in implementing Application Engineering methodologies, processes, and practices to specific requirements of projects/programs which may include product design engineering, information security, code maintainability and reliability.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to work somewhat independently through complex solutions and infrastructure to troubleshoot and analyze issues.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Possesses qualities necessary to be part of a high performing application engineering project team which delivers technical value.
  • Good interpersonal communication and organizational skills required and can work side-by-side with non-technical business team product owners to discuss their requirements.
  • Strong technical skills designing, developing, debugging, documenting, and implementing applications.
  • Knowledge of organizational structure of the firm to facilitate work with groups outside of the immediate technical team.
  • Possesses an understanding of IT Services: service offerings, technical standards and policies, technical and business strategies as well as organizational structure.
  • Maintains awareness of new and emerging technologies and the potential application on service offerings and products provided by IT.
  • Advanced level technical skills in hardware installation and support.
  • Intermediate level technical skills in database engineering, infrastructure, network engineering, configuration management, IT environment and design management, technical architecture, and devops practices.
  • Intermediate level soft skills in relationship building, communicating with impact, critical thinking, driving outcomes, complex problem solving, and client trust and value

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical guidance to colleagues to ensure agreed outcomes are achieved.
  • May be asked to assess the technical skills of the Application Engineering staff where appropriate.
  • Provides supervision and support to ensure quality, adherence to application engineering methodologies, standards, leading practices, budgets, and timelines are met with junior colleagues.
  • Serves as a role model by promoting and demonstrating commitment to Application Engineering methodologies, processes and standards for both EY and industry-wide, recommending process improvements when necessary.
  • Lends expertise to internal IT teams and task forces as well as other IT projects/programs.

Other Requirements:

  • Overtime and vacation scheduling are dependent upon team priorities and may change during the course of a year.
  • Must be able to communicate fluently in English, both written and verbal.

Education Requirements:

  • A degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or equivalent work experience.

Experience:

  • 3-5+ years hands on experience building, integrating and delivering software solutions
  • Experience in Application Design.
  • Ability to translate business objectives into software solutions.
  • Demonstrated experience in utilizing flexible sourcing options to deliver application engineering services.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with application vendors/external resource providers and managing key contacts to deliver value for the money.
  • Ability to step in to operations issues to help resolve them.
