Role Summary

Vialto Partners is seeking an experienced Tax Director/Senior Manager to join our growing Tax practice in Japan.

This is a leadership role offering the opportunity to advise multinational companies, internationally mobile individuals, business owners, and high-net-worth clients on a broad range of Japanese and cross-border tax matters.

As a Tax Director/Senior Manager, you will work closely with clients to provide practical, commercially focused tax advice while leading client engagements, developing junior professionals, and contributing to the continued growth of our Japan practice.

This role is ideal for an experienced tax professional who enjoys solving complex technical issues, building trusted client relationships, and working within an international environment.

Key Responsibilities

Client Advisory & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the delivery of complex Japanese and cross-border tax engagements for multinational organisations, internationally mobile employees, executives, and private clients.
  • Advise clients on Japanese individual income tax, international taxation, tax residency, global mobility, and other cross-border tax matters.
  • Provide guidance on inheritance tax, gift tax, succession planning, executive compensation, and related tax issues where appropriate.
  • Review complex tax returns, tax calculations, and advisory work to ensure technical excellence and quality.
  • Identify tax risks and provide commercially practical solutions for clients.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to clients while maintaining high standards of client service.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor managers, senior associates, and associates across client engagements.
  • Support the development of junior team members through coaching, technical guidance, and on-the-job learning.
  • Contribute to building a collaborative, high-performing team culture.

Business Development & Practice Growth

  • Develop and strengthen long-term relationships with clients and professional networks.
  • Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships and support new business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Japan and the wider APAC region on cross-border engagements.
  • Represent Vialto through industry events, seminars, and technical presentations where appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Japanese Tax Accountant (Zeirishi) qualification.
  • Approximately 8–10 years of relevant tax experience within a professional services environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Japanese individual income tax
    • International taxation
    • Global mobility taxation
    • Corporate taxation
    • Inheritance and gift taxation
  • Experience managing complex client relationships and leading multiple engagements.
  • Previous experience mentoring and developing junior professionals.
  • Business-level Japanese is essential.
  • English proficiency is highly desirable, as many of our clients and colleagues operate in an international environment.
