What's the role?


The objective of the Sustainability Lead role is to influence and drive the environmental and social dimensions into business strategies through engagement and collaboration with the in market leadership team. The Sustainability Lead influences APAC senior management to ensure the effective implementation of projects defined annually by the global sustainability team.

This is a nine month fixed-term contract.

Responsibilities include:

1. Drive internal action & engagement

  • Influence and drive business strategies that reflect social and environmental priorities in APAC markets (Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia) by developing strong relationships with key business leaders (supply chain, marketing & brand, sales and market insights)
  • Set up and manage strong sustainability multifunctional forums and networks within the APAC region, connected with global sustainability networks to align on key strategic choices, review progress and address barriers to drive stakeholder engagement and internal / external communication programs.
  • Ensure the buy-in of in-market leads to deliver on global plans.


2. Lead end-to-end Sustainability Projects

  • Project-manage projects defined by the global sustainability team and the ones specifically originated in the region that align to Zespri’s priorities. Projects may fall under but not exclusively under climate, packaging, and social responsibility.
  • Ensure accountability in the market leadership to ensure the project delivery and overcome barriers along the project cycle.


3. Communications & external engagement

  • Develop and implement engagement plans with customers to inform about progress and to recruit allies to work with us in the areas that are material to the business This includes the adaptation and creation of locally relevant assets.
  • Develop a network of stakeholders that provide platforms to tell our environmental and social story and that support the projects we do locally.
  • Drive our communication strategy across stakeholders, create communication assets and shape tactics to communicate through our Brand, Markets and Corporate organizations
  • Leverage internal capabilities and conduct pan-regional trends research to maximize opportunities, achieve agility in all sustainability matters and challenges.


4. Reporting on performance to the business & externally

  • Establish regional KPIs aligned to global objectives and key measures. Replicate the global reporting framework into regional processes and practices.
  • Competitive intelligence as COE in the region – gather knowledge and insights on commitments and action plans of our competitors to learn and step up our sustainability plans and vision.
  • Identify areas of risk and work with the global teams to develop standby statements and contingency plans.

Who are you?

The Sustainability Lead will be an individual who empowers action, ensuring alignment identifies risk and opportunities deriving from policies and market trends on environmental and social areas. The successful candidate will have:

  • Passion for sustainability and a desire to have an impact with global food systems
  • At least five years’ experience of building strategies and plans that involve a wide range of stakeholders (internal and/or external), and delivering on them (a plus if in sustainability).
  • Understanding of “market side” of a FMCG multinational company, especially trade marketing and sales operations.
  • Ability to influence and lead cross functional teams.
  • Capability to work independently and prioritize effectively.
  • Superior analytical, written, and verbal visionary communication skills being able to take a message across a broad range of disciplines from technical and compliance, to sales, to executives.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Experience working across cultures, including proficiency in English within a business environment (spoken and written) due to the nature of the role
  • Bachelors or Masters degree.
